The story
Early Fiat 1100s still had a separate chassis carrying the engine, suspension and body. It is the base of everything: if the chassis is not sound, no restoration lasts.
This job is about that chassis. It arrived with its wheels still on and rust everywhere; it was taken apart, cleaned to bare metal, treated and painted, then rebuilt with overhauled mechanics and new parts.
The restoration step by step
From rust to a black chassis
- Step 1 of 4
How it arrived
Rust on the side rails, cross-members, front axle and rear axle: the chassis was put on stands and taken apart piece by piece.
- Step 2 of 4
Cleaned, treated and painted
The chassis goes back to bare metal, gets rust protection and black paint. Brackets, U-bolts, bump stops and suspension rubbers are all new.
- Step 3 of 4
Gearbox and brakes
The gearbox is stripped, washed and checked; the drum brakes are overhauled: shoes, springs and wheel cylinders cleaned and checked.
- Step 4 of 4
Reassembly
Front axle, engine, gearbox and rear axle go back on the painted chassis; the complete chassis is ready to take the body.
