The story
The MG TD is the small British roadster of the early 1950s: two seats, disc wheels, an upright grille and a lively four-cylinder engine. Around thirty thousand were built, most of them for export.
On a roadster like this the hood is half the car: it keeps the weather out, but it also shapes the silhouette. For this green TD the book follows the work step by step: the frame, the beige canvas, the windowed sidescreens, the doors and the tan interior.
The restoration step by step
A hood stitched to measure
- Step 1 of 4
The frame
Before the canvas comes the frame: hood sticks and sidescreen frames are fitted and adjusted on the car, together with the windscreen.
- Step 2 of 4
The hood canvas
The beige canvas is cut, tried on the car and stretched over the sticks; straps and fasteners hold it to the body.
- Step 3 of 4
The sidescreens
The sidescreens are built on their frames: canvas, stitching and clear windows, tried and adjusted until they seal well against hood and doors.
- Step 4 of 4
Doors and interior
The front sidescreens open with the doors; door cards and the pleated tan seats complete the cockpit.
