Veteran vehicles in Switzerland: restoring without losing the status

In short
In Switzerland, a vehicle first registered at least 30 years ago, in original and well-kept condition, can be entered as a veteran vehicle after an inspection by the cantonal road traffic office. A restoration does not rule this out, as long as the result is true to the original: that is why we document every stage and use period materials and colours.
What veteran status is
In Switzerland, a car or truck first registered at least 30 years ago can be entered as a veteran vehicle in its registration document. It must be in well-kept original condition; the inspection is carried out by the cantonal road traffic office.
Veteran status usually means longer intervals between periodic inspections and access to dedicated insurance. It is meant for enthusiast use, not daily driving: the details are set by the canton and the insurer, so it is always best to ask first.
What «original» means
It doesn't mean "never touched". It means the vehicle presents as it left the factory, or with period modifications: colours, materials, trim, wheels and accessories consistent with the model. Out-of-place modern details cause problems, not the fact that it has been restored.
How we plan the restoration
- Research before dismantling: colours, fabrics, leathers and trim for the year and version.
- Keep what can be kept: salvageable original parts are restored rather than replaced. More in conservation or full restoration.
- Period materials for upholstery, interiors and soft tops.
- A complete photo book, from dismantling to delivery, with a list of the work: useful for the inspection and for the vehicle's history.
After the restoration
The vehicle returns to Switzerland with the customs formalities (see restoring a classic car in Italy from Switzerland) and is then presented for the cantonal inspection. If veteran status is the goal, tell us on the first call: we'll steer every decision that way.
Rules can change and differ from canton to canton: always check them with the road traffic office before starting.
